Mobile Matters / Phone News and Happenings / Vodafone UK Unveils Cheaper Mobile Broadband Services
|
on: January 31, 2008, 09:54:39 PM
|
http://www.ispreview.co.uk/cgi-bin/news/viewnews.cgi?id=EkpEZlluVFQFaKnkIs New Consumer Price Plans For customers who use mobile internet on a laptop or a PC every day, Vodafone is launching the Mobile Broadband 3 GB price plan for £15 per month (incl. VAT). This halves the price of the existing 3 GB offering while providing unrivalled top download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps per second.
Assurance abroad Customers wishing to take their laptops abroad can roam for just £9.99 per 24 hour session with Vodafone Connect Abroad in selected countries. Customers can connect in almost all of Europe west of Russia, plus USA, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Fair Usage Policy applies.
No commitment For occasional internet users Vodafone UK will introduce a 30 day no commitment plan, Mobile Broadband 30 Day, for just £20.
Greater predictability With the launch of the new Mobile Broadband pricing Vodafone has introduced a more predictable flat rate charge of £15 per 1 GB for out-of-bundle data downloads. This offers greater certainty, billing clarity for customers as well as greater value for money.
Mobile Broadband Business It is also good news for Vodafone’s business customers as the monthly fair usage on its newly named Mobile Broadband Business and Mobile Broadband Business Travel plans goes from 3GB to 5GB per month. Vodafone’s exclusive USB Modems, the Stick and the Pebble will be free on 18 month and 24 month contracts. Those customers connecting to the 24 month price plan will enjoy six months free line rental (worth £150) and 18 month customers, can save £75 with three months free. From the 4th February 2008

Social Side / Off-Topic / Tiscali bought Pipex then they started saving money
|
on: January 31, 2008, 09:49:55 PM
|
taken from El Reg: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/01/28/tiscali_pipex_migrations/ Earlier this week, the man in charge of Tiscali's Italian parent company said that profit is his number one priority for 2008. He also hinted that a sell-off of its UK broadband business is likely in the next two years. Thousands of ex-Pipex customers have been suffering unexplained interruptions in their broadband service in recent weeks, as their new provider Tiscali stealthily works to cut costs.
People suffering a broadband outage as a result of the work are told by customer services, recently outsourced overseas, that their line is undergoing "essential engineering work". One Reg reader was initially told the downtime was BT's fault. more from thinkbroadband: http://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/3373-tiscali-slowly-migrating-pipex-users-to-its-own-platform.html Think sinking ship, and that's what Pipex now is.

Mobile Matters / Phone and Network Chat / Skypephone also in twin pack

on: November 24, 2007, 04:24:39 PM

what does the Skypephone do? What is Skype?
Skype lets you call - or chat - with any of your mates who are also on Skype anywhere in the world, anytime. Totally free. If you're a Pay As You Go user just top up every month to keep your phone active. It's really easy to use, too. Just hit the Skype button to connect to more than 246 million users on the Skype network and away you go. For as long as you like. Without paying a penny extra. Your Skype phone also lets you Land on Planet 3
It's what makes 3 so …3. It's where you play games. Watch TV. Get the latest gossip and news. See the football highlights… You’ll be surprised, maybe even shocked, at how much there is. Surf the web
Not the ‘ordinary’ Web, mind, but the Mobile Web. The one with content that's scaled down to the size of your screen - to make surfing on your mobile that much easier, faster and better. Play your music
It's what you’d expect from any self-respecting mobile nowadays. Except that the 3 SkypePhone also connects you to the 3 MusicStore, where you can take your pick from over 1,000,000 tracks. you can buy one for £49.99 or two for £89.99 http://threestore.three.co.uk/payg/default.aspx?id=1267

so it's forcing bootloader without the * and # and hold power key routine.
to force ************************************************************************************
Yes. None of the buttons "appear" to do anything. I have tried disconnecting the power and then holding the "*" and "#" while powering it back up and it still says, "Boot Loader 07.b0 SW Version: TRIPLETS_G_0B.09.2FR OK to Program USB Transfer Mode". Any Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This is the announcement of "Debian-Installer Loader", a win32 loader for Debian Installer.
Overall, the process is very simple (it's been inspired by a similar project with Ubuntu). D-I-L runs on the users' win32 system, auto-detects wether the CPU supports 64-bits, picks the appropiate linux and initrd.gz images for netboot, and uses GRUB for DOS to chainload into it.
This has a few interesting applications:
- Migrating to Debian on hardware without CD drive (or USB boot capability). - Migrating to Debian for users who have no idea how to burn an ISO and/or how to configure their BIOS for CD boot. - Migrating a system to Debian inmediately, at any time, wether we have a boot CD at hand or not. - Advocating Debian to Windows users. Rather than give them a CD (expensive), give them a piece of paper with an URL.
Frontend site for Windows clients to visit is at:

okay why is it upgrading linux can cause spectacular crashes? downloaded minime pclinuxos only 300mb. installed, nice simple and no useless applications. pointed the repository at an ftp closer to home, simply because ibiblio is slow and bloated. six times faster download speed obtained. updated to latest kde and dkms dynamic kernel management system.

Mobile Matters / Phone and Network Chat / free calls for a year on threepay
|
on: July 31, 2006, 06:55:16 PM
|
https://threestore.three.co.uk/PAYG/default.aspx# * Each mobile comes ready to use with a £30 starter Top-up credit that you can spend on pretty much anything. (calls, texts, video downloads, you name it). It’s valid for 60 days. * • Call any other 3 UK mobiles as much as you like for a whole year, completely free (and that includes video calls too), as long as you and the person you call are both in the UK. * • Here is the small print. If you want to keep on making those free calls, you need to top-up each mobile at least once every 30 days. If you miss a top-up, you won’t be able to make any more free calls. And once the free calls are gone, you won’t be able to get them back, however many times you top-up. * • These Cash Top-ups start at £10, and they let you do just about anything on your mobile - talk, text, download stuff... * • And of course, you can bring your number with you.
TwinPack offer relates to the purchase of a pair of handsets purchased together in one box which is designated as ‘TwinPack’ for a limited period. Each handset will include a Starter Top-up credit of £30 which can be used on any of 3’s Services. The credit has a validity period of 60 days. Each handset will be provisioned with an offer allowing free unlimited 3UK-to-3UK voice calls and video calls for the first 12 months. Once the Starter Top-up credit has expired, or has been used up, you’ll need to top up with a Cash or Bundle Top-up (Add-ons are not eligible) each handset at least once every 30 days to remain eligible for your free calls. If you fail to top up your handset in a 30 day period, you’ll use your eligibility for the free calls offer, and any further Top-ups will not re-enable this offer. 3UK-to-3UK voice and video calls means calls made from your handset in the UK to other 3UK customers. interesting way of shifting zte f866s,

Mobile Matters / Phone and Network Chat / The Sun investigates big-name companies content to keep “valued customers”
|
on: June 24, 2006, 10:12:05 PM
|
By CAROLINE IGGULDEN MILLIONS of us dread the phrase: “Your call is important to us, please stay on the line.” And today The Sun investigates big-name companies content to keep “valued customers” waiting to get through to call centres - many in Delhi or Mumbai, India. We rang a string of firms and started the clock to find the winners and losers at customer service. While some get a thumbs up, others leave callers hanging on the line for a shameful amount of time. Phone queues cost our economy millions of pounds a year in lost economic output. Some companies also claw back cash from helplines for existing customers — meaning the longer the delay the customer suffers while on the line complaining about a problem, the more cash the firms earn. Another common tactic is to avoid contact with customers at any cost by subjecting callers to a barrage of keypad prompt demands. Here is how long we hung on during each call until we heard a human voice.

Mobile Matters / Phone and Network Chat / Re: Orange itemised bill £1.50 from July 1st
|
on: June 23, 2006, 08:15:10 PM
|
OK for all you people out there livid at the fact that Orange just decide to increase the Itemised Billing charge from £0 to £1.50 mid way your 12 /18 month contract, this is how to make sure they do not get away with it.
Below is exactly how to do this (tested and works).
Tested on this case: mid 12 month contract, with 300 to 600 minute usage.
How to go about it:
1) Write in requesting that they cancel your contact in accordance with Clause 15.1 and 4.3 of my contract as they are increasing charges for Itemised Billing from £0 to £1.50. The contact can be downloaded from the main page of the orange web site at the very bottom where it says "terms and conditions" Request that they contact you with your PUK code so you can take your number with you and that due to the fact that they are causing this that no charges and penalties should be incurred by you.
2) They will write back saying one of the following: a) That itemised billing (charge or free) is not part of the contract. b) They are not increasing the charge as you do not have to have the Itemised Bill as you can opt out or download it free from the account area of the orange web site. They may also say that if you want to cancel you have to buy yourself out of the contract.
3) You then write to them opening an "Official Complaint" (important that you say this) informing them that you do not agree with their assessment of the situation and that you require them to cancel the contract and if they do not accept to do this you require them to send you a letter saying that the complaint has come to "deadlock" or "lockout", otherwise known as a Deadlock / Lockout letter. You inform them that you will be contacting CISAS (COMMUNICATIONS & INTERNET SERVICES ADJUDICATION SCHEME, they can be contacted on 02074217432).
4) At this point someone from orange WILL have already contacted you. They will offer to refund the itemised bill for the rest of the contact and if you request it they will cancel your contact.
FAQ
COMMUNICATIONS & INTERNET SERVICES ADJUDICATION SCHEME (CISAS): These people take complaints that can not be resolved and decide who is right. Orange does NOT want it to get to them and will settle with you before then. Only contact CISAS if they have given you a lockout / deadlock letter and have not offered you anything.
Address to write to orange on: Correspondence Department PO Box 10 Pachway Bristol BS32 4BQ
Official Complaint: It is important to rase an "Official Complaint" and get a Echo number to track it with.
TIPS and TRICKS
Orange will never accept fault or that they are in breach of contract. Be firm but polite at all times. Do NOT at any point show any doubt that you are correct and they are wrong. Do not ask for unreasonable things. In this situation waving the Itemised Billing charge till the end of the contact is fair and termination of the contract is fair.

Mobile Matters / Phone and Network Chat / Orange itemised bill £1.50 from July 1st
|
on: June 11, 2006, 12:11:20 AM
|
To cancel the itemised billing, just text the word BILL to 2018, or call Orange Customer Services on 150 from your phone within the next 10 days. From July 1st Orange will charge £1.50 for all pay monthly itemised billing, does not matter if you are a new or old customer, you will be charged. Orange covered this in a change in their terms and conditions last year, putting a clause in enabling them to alter prices/services that are not a 'core service' (IE Calling/Texting).

The Link and Pc World are owned by the Dixons Group.
Which means the printers probably came in the same bulk order and were split between the two franchises
and PAYGO10 as the discount code on the link site will knock 10% off that price. So £46.03 for an e760 plus £10 trade in, = £36.03 for an e760

I have no problems with my 512mb mini-sd.
tried gnubox with my 3650 and ngage.
opera mini fails to do wap version of this forum wap.mobmms.com
I'll have to look for what else I've used.
http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/nonagss60.htm

use them from www.topsony.com or http://www.pappfer.hu/firmware/k750.html with either
speed_unlock aka setool 2 http://www.unlockeasy.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=43&min=10&orderby=titleA&show=10
or

http://www.se-world.info/cda-strings.php?device=1&offset=30
as you can see your CDA needs to be generic if you'd like to use SEUS to update your K750i and remove any network branding CDA102338/38 is Generic UK.
all you need to buy is a fighter cable and you will be able to start unbranding

right lets see what we can find out about your new k750i
it wont work with your dss-25, so you can forget about that.
http://www.davinciteam.com/client.zip
download the latest davinci client and test your dcu-60 cable to find out what CID your new k750i is
CID is the bootloader on Sonyericssons and if your CID is lower than 49 you can do a whole lot for free after buying a fighter cable set for £19.99 http://allgsm.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=1_71&products_id=380 or a Cruiser 4-in-1 cable set for £24.99 http://allgsm.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=1_71&products_id=347
alternatively you could buy a usbsmart which includes the above cables and not have to bother with free hacked software.
let me know what cid your k750i is first and then I'll inform you what is available

Mobile Matters / Phone and Network Chat / How can you setup GMail mailbox on your S60 phones?
|
on: May 24, 2006, 06:32:12 PM
|
* Firstly, you need to enable POP access on your GMail account. Logon GMail and click Settings | Forwarding and POP. * Enable your POP Download by selecting “Enable POP for all mail” or “Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on”. * I would also recommend selecting “keep GMail’s copy in the Inbox” so that you can still access your email from the web interface.
Configuring Google POP access
*

Good Phone, if you know how to tweak it by fish_liver_oil May 5, 2006 I just purchased this phone from ebay a couple of days ago...
Most phones out there now basically have everything in them, no matter what manufactue you buy from, if the phone starts out priced at $800, then it's gonna have the standard features (camera, bluetooth, infrared, etc.) What really caught my attention is the appearance. This clamshell is very slim and the front cover layout is very nice, with the speaker on the top cover, as opposed to the bottom of the phone.
PROS: - high resolution - Loud Ringing : good when i'm on the bus - Many apps and themes - Comes with USB cable and connection software: for allthe other phones i've purchased, i've had to search endlessly for cables, correct usb drivers and software, not to mention configuring the COM ports..) - Loud 'click' when opening or closing the clamshell: yeah very good tactile feedback - flashlight: you can turn this on/off whenever you like.. good for pictures and finding your way - symbian OS: good for customization, installation and hacks - themes: nice!
CONS: - no mp3s for ringtones: i looked very hard for some way around it, the only way is to download wmaPlus, which will install a wma codec onto the phone, and then all you wma files will be recognized when you go to select a ringtone. (you can download any mp3 to wma convertor software, quality is the same) - cannot change the wallpaper for the external display: i guess the developers totally neglected this area - video and pictures are choppy: the frame rate of the camera application is low, making the motion choppy. (download a better camera/video application) - miniSD card can only address up to 256 MB of data: Don't be fooled into buying a 2GB miniSD card! the max it can take is a 256MB miniSD card, period.
overall it's an excellent phone, you just have to do a little bit of internet surfing to find out how to tweak it to overcome it's shortcomings!

Get your orange N70
Order you Orange PAYG Sim, It costs £1 but you get £1 credit when you register the SIM and if your lucky like me I got 30 free Text messages from the operator. Guess she liked my voice http://shop.orange.co.uk/shop/sim_co...ack?WT.svl=404
When the SIM arrives register it and get your phone number from Orange. There is an 0800 number in the pack for you to register it so all free.
Once the SIM is register dial 450 on the orange phone and select option 1 to top up your PAYG SIM with £20. I had to do it twice as the only options were 5 10 15 and 25. So I went through once and topped up with £15 then again with £5. This is freephone anyway
Once you have £20 on your SIM dial 450 again and select option 2 from the first menu, option 2 from the second menu option 2 from the third menu.
You will be connected to the help desk which cost 25p. Small price to pay in my eyes.
Just say to them you have an Orange PAYG N70 which you want to unlock from the orange network. They are more than happy to do it.
They will take some details, charge the £20 fee to your PAYG phone and send a request off to Nokia for the unlock codes which they will e-mail back to you.
Now the only downside to this is they are stating lead times of 7-30 days for the unlock codes from Nokia. I requested mine this morning so will let you know how long it takes for the e-mail to come through. But then again I got an Orange number I can use temporarily as my Vodafone phone is knackered. So there is a good side. I just divert all voice calls to my orange until it is unlocked.
Hope this is of help and stops some of the how do I unlock my N70? You can only do it through the networks. But Orange are more than happy to oblige. And why not. All those £20 fees for not much work. Adds up to a tidy little profit

Brilliant Phone, April 30, 2006 Reviewer: L. Hollis - See all my reviews This phone is really good. It's got a top-quality video recorder, a top-quality camera, a sound recorder, mp3/media player, infrared, bluetooth, internet access - almost everything you would want on a phone. Having had two previous Sony Ericsson models (K300i and a really old model) it's definately the best Ericsson i've had, and even my friends say that it's better than their phones (many of them top models). However, i have had two small problems with it. The first problem is that it loses memory quite quickly. I have about 40 pictures on my phone (all small, only using up about 5kb of space) and 5 video clips (which altogether probably take up roughly 1MB). My friend sent me two songs (about 4 minutes long each) via Bluetooth (which is great!) and I realised I only had about 1 MB of memory left on my phone. So I had to delete one of the songs. Even if i didn't have any pictures or video clips on my phone, i wouldn't be able to have more than 4-5 songs on my mp3 part of the phone. Also, the phone loses battery quite quickly if you leave it on for a little while. But this isn't a big problem because i just charge it every night. However, all in all it is a really brilliant phone. I've got the pink cover and it looks really cool. There is an easy way round the main problem- buy an mp3 player! The camera and video quality is really good and i love the Bluetooth and Infrared. There are some cool lighting effects too, and i think it's great value for money[...]. Buy it!!!!!!!!!

By Nobody in particular on 15/05/2006 08:13:09 Hello Pretty handy to have PDA features in a phone. Have got all the World Cup matches stored in my calendar! Full size qwerty really speeds up messaging. Eats batteries at an incredible rate. Will need charging at least every day and possibly during the day if you use it for anything other than a phone for more than an hour. I bought this phone fully knowing that it is a discontinued product and I can't find any bits of kit for this phone i.e. spare battery; official pouch; USB cradle. So, only get one if you can afford to bin it when the battery degrades. Cheers Ian

Mobile Matters / Phone and Network Chat / Changing the p900 clock...
|
on: May 18, 2006, 11:25:57 PM
|
Ok, well here are some rather primitive instructions...
These instructions were found here: "http://p900themes.altervista.org/tutorial.htm"
"Going to control panel - > display - > power tab, you can set power save function for visualizing on the black screen, after a lap of time that your phone remains inactive to flip closed, a digital clock. It's possible to personalize the clock replacing the font whom it uses by default, with two mbm files to add in C:/system/data. These two files are SCREENBLANKERNUMSLARGE.MBM and SCREENBLANKERAMPMLARGE.MBM. The first one composed by 10 images bmp 24x47 pixel, 24 bit, 96dpi, on black background and with the numbers from 0 to 1 with the new font chosen white colored. The second one instead composed from 3 images bmp 14 x 47 pixel, 24 bit, 96dpi, on black background respective with acronyms "AM", "PM"and ":" using the same font as told before. Once you've got aech single bmp file, you must compress them in the two aforesaid files in mbm format with the application mbmconv.exe and transfer them in C:/system/data on our phone...that's all!!!"
As you can probably tell, this was not written by me. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dazbradbury/p900%20clock.htm

Mobile Matters / Phone News and Happenings / 3 selects Orange as new national roaming partner
|
on: May 10, 2006, 05:09:14 PM
|
3, the mobile media company, today announced that it has entered into a national roaming agreement with Orange.
The new agreement follows the completion of an auction for 3's national roaming business. All potential suppliers were evaluated prior to the auction and those that met 3's requirements for the supply of national roaming services were invited to register. Orange tendered the most competitive bid for the supply of voice, text and data services and has been selected as the preferred national roaming provider for 3 from the end of 2006.
The 3 network provides coverage for voice, text and 3G mobile media services to 88% of the UK population and the new agreement with Orange, which has 99% coverage for voice and text services, will ensure 3 customers continue to enjoy the national coverage that they are used to.
3 customers will continue to roam on O2, the current provider of national roaming to 3, until the transition phase commences in late 2006. Following the transition phase existing customers' handsets will select the Orange network in preference to O2, although they will still be able to roam onto O2. Going forward into 2007 all new customers will only roam onto the Orange network.
Bob Fuller, CEO 3 UK said: "Following a thorough and competitive process over the last eighteen months, I'm very pleased to announce that 3 has a new national roaming partner in the UK. It was important we had a competitive tender and I am delighted with the outcome of the process. This is a good agreement for both 3 and Orange and will ensure that we continue to offer a great service to our customers."
Bernard Ghillebaert, Executive Vice-President of Orange UK said: "The Orange network is renowned as one of the most robust and reliable networks in the UK and it makes commercial sense for us to utilise this asset within the wholesale market. We will continue to offer the highest levels of network reliability and service to all of our 15million customers and look forward to a fruitful relationship with 3."
Under the terms of the agreement, when 3 customers are outside areas covered by the 3 network they will seamlessly roam onto the Orange network, where they will be able to continue to make and receive voice calls, send and receive text and multi-media messages, and access GPRS data services.
The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Mobile Matters / Phone News and Happenings / Vodafone offloading dated handsets on eBay
|
on: May 05, 2006, 10:10:17 PM
|
Vodafone has turned to online auction site eBay as a means of offloading its end-of-line handsets, it said today.
A recent trial carried out by the mobile phone giant showed eBay was the most lucrative means of selling its old stock.
It sold up to 3,000 handsets per week directly to buyers via the website during the four month pilot scheme.
As a result, Vodafone plans to continue using the website to sell its less fashionable older phones.
It traditionally sold older models to retailers or third party repair dealers for around 30% of their cost price.
Handsets sold via eBay during the trial period reached 60 to 70% of their cost price.
Vodafone’s handset range changes every three months, creating an ever-growing “tail” of depreciating products.
A phone on sale for £100 at launch will typically command just £50 just three months later.

Mobile Matters / Phone News and Happenings / T-Mobile launch new PAYG tariffs
|
on: May 02, 2006, 08:15:13 PM
|
From Mobile Today T-Mobile will scrap its current prepay tariffs and unveil two simple offers later this week.
New UK MD Jim Hyde wants the UK business to make the same impact on prepay as it has made on contract with Flext. The deals are similar to the no-nonsense format of easyMobile and Tesco.
The first deal offers a flat-rate 12p per minute on voice calls at any time and to any network. Heavy texters will be offered a similar 3p per text, any network, any time deal. The deals will be available from next month.
A T-Mobile spokesman confirmed details of the new tariff, adding: ‘It’s all about our focus on simplicity, transparency and fairness. There’s a space for a mobile operator to really own customer service. We always put it through the filter of does it deliver what the customer wants.’
The two deals will sit next to T-Mobile’s other prepay proposition, Mates Rates, which offers discounted prices of 5p voice minutes and 5p texts to other T-Mobile users.
One multiple retail chief said: ‘I applaud anything that brings in more simplicity. They are taking things that are quite complex and making them very simple – and they are using point-of-sale to communicate effectively to the consumer.’
Separately, Vodafone is plotting a similar prepay proposition for next month, although details were unavailable as Mobile went to press.
How T-Mobile will stack up against the rest T-Mobile Everyone voice tariff: 12 per minute any time, any network. Text Appeal tariff: 3 per text any time, any network
EasyMobile Voice: 15p off-net, 3p on-net. Text: 5p off-net, 1p on-net
Tesco Value n Voice: 15p. Text: 5p
Fresh Voice: 15p. Text: 5p
Virgin Voice: 35p off-net, 15p on-net (for the first five minutes, 5p after) Text: 10p off-net, 3p on-net
3 Voice: Between 10p and 30p. Texts: 10p. Plus, 5p per minute paid back during incoming calls, and 2p per incoming text
Orange Voice: 40p off-net, 20p on-net. Text: 10p
O2 Voice: 40p off-net, 25p on-net (for first three minutes, 5p after that). Text: 10p

Excellent buy, March 25, 2006 Reviewer: A electronics & photo fan This is a great buy. My old phone had expired and I just needed something reasonable to make calls - but what a great deal. There is much more than I need - but all the extras are great. Three other people I know have bought one since I got mine and they think it is great also. Great deal from Amazon considering it costs nothing because of the £30 credit - highly recommended. Click here to buy (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/external-search/203-7299571-3674319?mode=electronics-uk&keyword=c975) Motorola C975, March 29, 2006 Reviewer: "pattsy_r" Featurewise, the C975 is a good all-rounder with everything that you would expect from a 3G phone: video calling & video content downloads, integrated mp3 player, integrated speakerphone, a good quality display, and an expandable memory. The expandable memory is a very useful feature, enabling you to store content like video clips and MP3 tracks on a TransFlash card (up to 256 Mbytes), although you shouldn't expect to be able to store as much as a dedicated mp3 player.
There are two cameras on the C975. The first points inwards and is used for video calling. The second faces outwards and is intended for taking pictures of people or scenes. The quality of both cameras is fine, and the screen is large with 65k colours. It compares favourably with rival 3G phones.
Usefully, the C975 comes with an integrated speakerphone and voice dialling - ideal for video calls.
The build quality of the C975 is not really up to scratch and it does have a tendency to break. The joystick is also badly designed and is not easy to use. There is nothing particularly missing from the Motorola C975. It doesn't have top-end features like Bluetooth, 262k colour screen or a megapixel camera, but for the price you shouldn't expect that. The main downsides are high weight, poor battery life, that tricky joystick and poor build quality. The Motorola V975 has virtually the same specification as the C975, but is a clamshell design. Click here to buy (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/external-search/203-7299571-3674319?mode=electronics-uk&keyword=c975) Give It A Go!, April 3, 2006 Reviewer: A electronics & photo fan The Motorola C975 is certainly not the most up-to-date handset, but is perfectly functional and perhaps the best way to try out the 3 network as the amount of credit given with the phone is actually of higher value than the handset. It does however have the capabilities of newer phones and will happily play MP3's and video as long as you add storage. It comes with only a small (32 meg) memory card. It is easy to use, though of course the battery life diminishes if you spend all your time browsing the 3 content. Click here to buy (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/external-search/203-7299571-3674319?mode=electronics-uk&keyword=c975) Cheap and feature packed, April 11, 2006 Reviewer: Stephen Patrick (UK) After reading reports about the battery life I wondered what to expect, though for £29.99 I wasn't expecting much... How wrong I was!
The phone has a camera and video camera and the 3 services mean you can watch football highlights and music videos!
Plus with this phone I'm being paid to answer calls! Yes the battery life does mean a daily charge but for the price I don't believe it can be beat! Click here to buy (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/external-search/203-7299571-3674319?mode=electronics-uk&keyword=c975)

* Blockeroo is primarily a multiplayer game. You can play in single player or practice mode, but the multiplayer game is much more fun. * Blockeroo allows you to compete against 3 human opponents over Bluetooth. In fact, the game allows you to select 7 human opponents but due to the limitations of bluetooth you are likely to experience considerable network lag if you challenge more than 3 humans simultaneously. * Blockeroo contains some cunning artificial intelligence that allows you to play against bots (algorithms that play Blockeroo without human intervention). Consequently, the multiplayer game can still be enjoyed even if you have no friends with Series 60 devices or indeed no friends.

from Intel's web site (http://www.intel.com/design/mobile/platform/umpc.htm): Connecting while walking around London Kate goes online to see the news while preparing breakfast in the kitchen. She downloads an episode of Sesame Street and then plays it in the car for her kids on their way to school. In the afternoon, she goes shopping, uses GPS to find Bond Street, and gets a message announcing the hot sales of the day. She quickly IMs her friend Pam to share this information and while she waits for her at a café, she catches up with her email. Entertainment on Santa Barbara beaches Brad, Maria and Inez are ready for their exciting weekend in Santa Barbara. They packed sodas, snacks and the latest award-winning movie to watch on the road. They also packed their surfboards and 1,000 songs for a perfect day on the beach. They downloaded their favorite video games so they could continue the match they started two weeks ago. The three friends are ready for a fun digital weekend under the sun. Productivity while waiting in the lobby Tony anticipates that he’ll be waiting for at least a few hours, mostly standing in line and maybe an open seat if he’s lucky. He’s not worried. He’ll be able to send a few emails, view presentations, listen to a webcast, and even work on some ideas for his sales pitch. Now that’s one productive day. Accessing learning tools on a school field trip near Hong Kong The kids are excited—today they’re on a field trip to the ocean! They make electronic notes of their observations, take digital photos and post them on Yahoo.com, do research on the Internet to find data related to their assignment, and then put together a presentation for their classmates. A fun-filled day of learning while harnessing technology to its fullest extent. FACT: We didn't make any of that up

Mobile Matters / Phone and Network Chat / Re: Whats your upgrade going to be?
|
on: April 19, 2006, 08:00:49 PM
|
The 6280 has already been heavily criticised, and fairly so, for its absolutely tiny on-board memory footprint of 6MB. Really, in this day and age of memory production 6MB may as well be 6KB. So the need for additional memory is an absolute must on an S40 handset with the [multimedia] capabilities of the 6280.
Being a multimedia handset I decided to Bluetooth over a 5MB MP3 (Bump It by BEP) to see what it would do. The 6280 normally received "New Files" to its on-board memory in a folder called "Gallery Files". But with less than 4MB left I did wonder what it would do. Crash? Reject or ignore the file transfer? None of the above, it did surprise me when it automatically selected the root of the SD card, logging it in as a "New File" which I could then preview before moving to a more appropriate folder. Pretty smart and well thought out methinks.

Mobile Matters / Phone News and Happenings / Siemens negotiating to sell its telecoms unit to Motorola

|
Siemens is negotiating to sell its telecoms unit to Motorola, the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reports without reference to sources.
It is also said both companies declined to comment on this info.
The article in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (http://www.faz.net/s/RubE2C6E0BCC2F04DD787CDC274993E94C1/Doc~E8B949CC33D0242F58950D974A958ACAA~ATpl~Ecommon~Scontent.html) focuses the fact that such negotiations might reflect the strategy set last year by CEO of Siemens Klaus Kleinfeld, which implies selling of non-effective company’s assets. As you remember, Siemens sold its loss-making mobile phone business to BenQ in 2005.

PCB = Printed Circuit Board aka the green board with all the electronic bits on it. I'd replace the screen, I'd do this by buying a refurb from a mobile shop on payg, change the screen with the refurb and take the refurb back as faulty who said that? who said people used to do that with 3330s and 3310s, swapping the handsets and taking the 3310 back in the 3330 box and getting a refund.

ok my k608i did not have a glued in sim.
www.thelink.co.uk are selling them for £69.99 with £30 airtime included. Also includes a Miniusb cable, datasuite cd and stuff.
yes you can unlock them for free if they are not cid49, if they are cid49 they need to be testpoint unlocked which means dismantling the phone and grounding a point on the PCB.
After a bit of persuading www.davinciteam.com now offer k608 generic firmware if you want to debrand the phone but still use it on 3, if you use k600 firmware the phone model changes to k600 and you can never return to the k608 phone model resulting in you never being able to access the 3 portal again.

On the box it states ' This handset is permanently locked and will only work on the 3 network'. Well, I opened the box and it had all the new leaflets for the Wepay stuff, a 32meg Sandisk card and adapter and a brand new sealed SIM card - as well as the usual charger and headset. It's got a 32mb microsd included Click here to buy (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/external-search/203-7299571-3674319?mode=electronics-uk&keyword=c975)

Cheaper Nokia E62 version FCC Approved!
PhoneScoop reports that the FCC has approved a cheaper unreleased version of the few days ago approved Nokia E61.
Although the two phones look similar at the first sights but there are some major differences. The e62 lacks both 3G and Wi-Fi possibilities but at the same time it still includes Bluetooth and IR ports.
According to MobileBee, the Nokia E61 business phone will be available around mid March. Of course it's all just rumours, but we'll just have to wait and see.
It also switches out the Pop-Port in favor of a standard mini USB and 2.5 mm headset jack. The e62 also features a slightly modified keyboard in order to accommodate a "My Own" key. This key is present on all Series 80 devices and is meant as a shortcut for favorite user-installed applications and documents.
The e62 appears to run the same version of S60 as the e61, however it does not appear to have the email connectivity from Blackberry, Visto, Seven and others.emoves both 3G and Wi-Fi from the device but still includes both Bluetooth and IR.

Mobile Matters / Phone and Network Chat / Is 3 UK still incompetent
|
on: February 27, 2006, 10:26:13 PM

Dear 3,
I have held an account with you since 2003, I tried to change my address details with you in 2004, I tried by phone, and when that failed I tried by letter. We are now in 2006 and you are still sending my bills to my old address which I moved out of in August 2003. I would like to upgrade my contract to Online 675 and a Motorola a1000, my fears are that you will still not change my address and send the handset out to the old address. My other problem is that I have tried speaking to your upgrades team, they insist that the only handsets they have are the Nokia 6280, and the LG U880, plus they can only put me on £25 or £30 price plans, they also suggest using my old simcard, now technology does move quickly, surely your new simcards are more efficient than my 2003 simcard? I have a Motorola a830, it is old, and I would like to replace it with the Motorola a1000, simply because the accessories are the same.
My phone number on the account is 07782xxxxxx, I would have liked to have upgraded that contract last July, sadly because of your inefficiency to change my address I have had to take on a new number 07886xxxxxx and new account xxxxxx. I would like to combine the two accounts, so that both the numbers are on the new account xxxxxx, and at the address in the top right of my email. I have only emailed you because I do not feel from previous attempts to sort my accounts out, that anybody in Customer Services is interested in my problem.
I'm contactable on xxxxxx, I would suggest my old number but the phone does not pick up a decent reception and is prone to dropping calls. Sent this to executive office. I will not hold my breath.

N-Gage Or Disengage: Jani Karlsson On Nokia's Gaming Future (http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20060220/simons_01.shtml) With that, the interview drew to a close. With a strong commitment to the gaming experience on their emerging devices, Nokia continues to be an intriguing player to be so interested in the mobile gaming experience. But, with the N-Gage still to be entirely proven as a hardware or game platform in terms of widespread acceptance, further information on the giant company's plans will just have to wait until next month's Game Developers Conference.

Mobile Matters / Phone News and Happenings / 3 Set To Glue Your Sim!
|
on: February 23, 2006, 09:43:20 PM
|
3 is to glue its Sim cards into entry-level prepay handsets in a bid to hamper the box breakers that have diverted hundreds of thousands of 3 handsets from the UK market.
The move, starting this month, will see Sims glued into new ZTE handsets as well as new and refurbished Motorola C975s.
3 sales director Marc Allera (pictured) told Mobile that the move would guarantee that ‘the person buying [the phone] will be a genuine customer and won’t be selling it abroad’.
He said the move followed a test launch in selected 3 stores, which he described as successful. ‘We’ve done a trial pre-Christmas in our own stores, taken feedback from staff and customers, and we think it’s a practical solution.’
The Sims are being permanently bonded into handsets using epoxy resin. The process is being handled by handset logistics firm TRS.
‘We will be doing this on our entry-level handsets and those that aren’t secure,’ said Allera, adding that other handsets would be assessed on a ‘case-by-case’ basis.
Retailers Mobile has spoken to raised the issue of potential legal and competition concerns, however Allera dismissed these: ‘There is no legal issue.’
Ofcom’s director of communications, Matt Peacock, told Mobile that from a regulatory perspective the move was a physical extension of the handset or Sim-locking issue: ‘In November 2002 Oftel decided that improved consumer awareness of Sim locking is the best way to address the issue.’ The regulator defines Sim-locking as: ‘the practice where handsets are locked so they can only be used with the original provider of the service.’ This view effectively opened the way for operators to glue Sims into handsets, as long as customers are made aware of what they are being sold.
Allera told Mobile that he had a positive response from retailers to his Sim-sticking plans, although some raised concerns about customer service. One senior retailer described the move as potentially embarrassing: ‘How do you present this in a self-select environment? It’s not a great customer experience – we wouldn’t want to support that kind of proposition. I don’t want to have to explain what happens when a phone breaks at the point of sale.’
A top retail MD told Mobile: ‘I applaud opportunities to prevent box breaking, I’m just not sure this is the route. There are customer services issues.’

|
http://www.jerrykee.com/K700_Radio_E.htm D.I.Y. Listen radio with your K700/S700 without using handsfree
<<PART I >>
You can use the internal speaker of your K700 & S700 to listen to MP3 but NOT radio. Because you need a external antenna to enhance the radio reception!
With a small DIY adaptor, you can use the internal speaker of your K700/S700 to listen to radio!
Materials
Any T28/T29/T68 serial or USB cable!
HOW IT WORKS?
From T28 onward, by connecting the 2 pins at the connector, you will get your phone to "Handsfree Mode". Therefore, by using this 2 pins, you can turn your K700/S700 into "Handsfree Mode" and use the internal speaker to listen to the radio!
STEPS
(1) Open the cable with a cutter. Becareful with the cutter, not to cut your hand!
(2) Cut all the wires, because you don't need it!
(3) If pin 1 and pin 3 is connected, cut it and separate it!
(4) Connect pin 4 and 5 with a wire. Use a longer wire, because you will use it as an antenna too!
(5) Keep the wire in a good place and close the cable housing and it is done!
(6) Plug it into your K700/S700. Turn on the radio and don't forget the internal speaker and enjoy the music!

Have a look at the Xanadux wiki where more information is available. Many thanks to itsme for his hard work and excellent tools. Mobile Matters / Phone and Network Chat / Motorola Unveils Latest RAZR Slim Phone Z
|
on: February 08, 2006, 08:05:45 PM
|
By Kim Tae-gyu (http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/biz/200602/kt2006020819085311900.htm) Staff Reporter
Motorola’s latest slim phone model Z Motorola, the world’s second-largest cell phone vendor, Wednesday took the wraps off a slim slider phone, which it claims is the ultimate evolution of its hot seller RAZR. The 14.8-millimeter-thick model, codenamed Z to show its concept _ the final version of the ultra-thin phone series, was designed and developed in Korea.
As a result, the sleek model was first disclosed in Korea unlike its high-profile predecessor RAZR, a clamshell-type phone that hit the local shops last year only after a big success in the global arena.
``This is the thinnest among many slider phones available here but it by no means lacks applications compared to other handsets,’’ Gill Hyun-chang, chief executive at Motorola Korea, said.
Indeed, the model is outfitted with a 2.2-inch screen, a mega-pixel digital camera and an MP3 player on top of highly customized user interfaces provided on a metal keypad.
Motorola plans to market the Z through SK Telecom, the country’s primary mobile carrier, this month with a price tag between 500,000 won and 600,000 won.
Despite the upbeat expectation of Motorola, some raise suspicions whether or not it will repeat the notable success of RAZR, for which demands once outstripped its supplies.
The first and foremost hitch they present is that the Z cannot savor the status of the pioneer because slim sliders are currently flooding the market.
By contrast, the 14.5-millimeter-thick RAZR was the first wafer-thin handset in the market when it debuted last June and its popularity prompted other domestic producers to roll out copycat products.
On a more negative note for the new item, observers point out the prospects of the Z is uncertain since it is somewhat bigger than competitors.
``My first impression was that the Z is fit for foreigners’ big hands, not for Korea’s smaller ones. Its size is almost similar to that of the RAZR. But, the latter is okay here since it is a clamshell-type phone but a slider is different,’’ a Seoul analyst said.
``It remains to be seen whether tech-savvy Koreans will snap up the new phone as they did for the RAZR,’’ he added.

Mobile Matters / Phone and Network Chat / PayPal seeks mobile recruits
|
on: February 05, 2006, 12:43:37 AM
|
Person-to-person payments outfit PayPal has started recruiting business and product heads for a new mobile payments 'start-up' unit. The payments subsidiary of online auction house eBay has posted ads on job boards for a business manager and a senior product manager in the 'PayPal Mobile' group.
In the ads, the company describes PayPal Mobile as "a dynamic, young 'start-up' business unit within PayPal dedicated to bringing value-added mobile payment services to consumers and merchants."
PayPal has been eyeing the nascent market for mobile micropayments for some time. The company is understood to be keen to work with device manufacturers and wireless operators to provide PayPal as an integrated payments option for mobile content and gaming.
The imminent arrival of TextPayMe, a new PayPal-style person-to-person payment service that allows users to send and receive funds using SMS text messages, appears to have injected a new sense of urgency to this effort. http://www.finextra.com/fullstory.asp?id=14866

Mobile Matters / Phone and Network Chat / T-mobile UK new price plans for March 2006
|
on: February 02, 2006, 11:37:17 PM
|
Found on mobileburn T-Mobile will announce to the media next week that it plans to revolutionise contract tariffs for mobile phone users in the UK. In an amazing move, the network will offer a considerably more flexible list of talk plans aimed at covering all aspects of customer talk time and SMS needs.
From March 1st, T-Mobile will offer 2 options for new customers connecting to a new talk plan. The first package will be called Relax and will have a choice of 6 tariffs. The plans will no longer be described by inclusive minutes. The monthly line rental cost per month will instead fill that gap. The Relax tariffs will include the Relax 20, 25, 30, 35, 50, and 75, each offering a large increase on previous offerings in the monthly allowance.
The brand new set of tariffs available on 18 month connections only will certainly attract the bargain hunter. The Flext plans will incorporate an element of 'mix and match' into it. A monthly line rental will be charged, but a higher amount of usage credit will be available to be put towards calling, texting, picture messaging, and voicemail. The Flext tariffs will be labelled in the same way as the Relax plans, but will differ in usage allowed.
With the Flext 20 plan, the line rental cost will be £20 ($35 USD) per month, but a £34 ($60 USD) usage allowance will be included. So while call prices are charged at 20p per minute and texts at 10p each, with £34 worth of credit the customer will be able to mix and match their usage. 170 anytime, cross network minutes or 85 minutes and 170 text messages in this instance would be available. The Flext 35 will offer a massive £180 usage cost per month to subscribers, enabling customers to have an allowance of 900 minutes per month or 1800 text messages, or a mixture of both.
T-Mobile has also said that after 6 months, if the user has not been getting the most from their chosen talk plan, it will perform an account 'health check' and move them down to a lower tariff if needed. While this is normal with some operators, T-Mobile UK has had a policy of downgrading tariffs only after 11 months.
T-Mobile are rolling out a £10 million ($17.7 million USD) month long advertising campaign in March to push their new product. With the network's parent company also sponsoring the World Cup in Germany this year, T-Mobile's customer numbers are set to explode.

ORANGE LAUNCHES UK'S FIRST EDGE NETWORK
EDGE complements the Orange 3G network, improving delivery of advanced mobile services in the UK
Five 3G and EDGE-enabled handsets available from Orange on launch
EDGE-enabled BlackBerry 8700g and Business Everywhere laptop data card launch this quarter
London. 1st February 2006. Orange today launched the UK's first live EDGE network, providing its customers with faster data speeds when using advanced mobile services such as email-on-the-move, the Internet, and music and video downloads.
Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution (EDGE) is an industry recognised technology that provides download and browsing speeds that are up to three-times faster than GPRS. Orange tested the EDGE network throughout 2005 and now has 300 network sites enabled for EDGE across the UK. Orange intends to have over 1,500 sites enabled for EDGE by the end of the year.
The EDGE network complements Orange's existing 3G network by providing enhanced delivery of advanced mobile services and by extending Orange UK's coverage for high data speeds. The Orange EDGE radio network is based on technology designed and supplied by Nokia and is live on the Orange network today.
Bernard Ghillebaert, Executive Vice President of Orange UK, said: "Orange is consistently recognised as having both the largest integrated second and third generation mobile network for data, and for delivering the best quality of service. The addition of EDGE strengthens our ability to offer both businesses and consumers access to high-speed data services in the UK."
At launch, there are five 3G and EDGE-enabled handsets in the Orange portfolio - the Nokia 6280, 6630, 6680 and N70, and the SPV M5000 (developed for Orange by Taiwanese manufacturer HTC).
In addition, Orange will also introduce two new EDGE-enabled products to the UK business market this quarter - the BlackBerry® 8700g(tm) and Business Everywhere laptop data card. Business Everywhere users will benefit from the best network for business and seamless access to the EDGE, 3G, GPRS.and Wifi networks. The BlackBerry 8700g features an Intel processor and a re-engineered device platform that supports faster Web browsing and application performance.
Across Europe, Orange now has EDGE networks in UK, France, Slovakia, Romania, Poland and Belgium (Mobistar).

Mobile Matters / Phone and Network Chat / Get Paid to Receive 3G Mobile Calls and Texts
|
on: February 01, 2006, 05:29:38 PM
|
Europe UK : 3, the UK's leading mobile media company, is shaking up the mobile market yet again with the launch of a revolutionary service that, for the first time, pays customers to receive calls and texts.
The new pay-as-you-go price service from 3 - called 'WePay' - will see customers rewarded with a cash credit for calls and texts they receive. So with 5p per minute for calls received and 2p per text received, it really does pay to be popular on 3.
Customers claim their cash credit each time they purchase a new WePay Top-up voucher - the credit can then be used to purchase any 3 services, from texts and calls to buying music tracks and watching TV on their mobiles.
For example, when a customer receives a five-minute call, they earn enough credit to send two texts, or send a picture message or watch the highlights from two episodes of Coronation Street.
Graeme Oxby ( inset ), 3's Marketing Director, explains: "It pays to be popular. Anyone who regularly receives calls and texts could end up much better off by moving to 3. You pick up, we pay up; it's as simple as that."
"The introduction of WePay means we've raised the bar on rewarding loyal PAYG customers and at the same time created a way for everyone to enjoy music and TV on their mobile."
WePay is the next development in 3's mission to bring better value to UK mobile users. The pre-pay market is notoriously complicated with a plethora of tariffs and special offers.
In response, consumers have had to adopt increasingly sophisticated strategies to find the best value, from only using their mobiles off-peak to owning several different handsets on a variety of networks and tariffs. Continental Research's Autumn 2005 Mobile Report suggests that as many as 5.9 million consumers in the UK now carry more than one phone.
3 devised WePay, in combination with low outbound call and text rates and the largest range of 3G handsets available on pay-as-you-go, to create a compelling reason for consumers who make and receive a lot of calls and messages to move to 3, port their number and use 3 as their only network.
It currently takes at least seven days to port your number in the UK, whereas in other countries such as Ireland and Pakistan, it takes just a couple of hours.
Marketing Director Graeme Oxby continued: "Because the process can be slow, only a fraction of people on PAYG port their number when they get a new phone. Our new reward for picking up calls and texts makes it worthwhile for consumers to move their number."
As part of its new Pay-as-you-go service, 3 will also launch a range of stylish new handsets designed by fashion designer Roberto Cavalli for its PAYG customers.
The WePay tariff is available from 1 February 2006.
How it works… A customer on WePay who receives 100 minutes of calls and 50 texts a month will earn £6.00 credit. He or she can claim their cash credit when they purchase a new WePay Top-up, and the credit can then be used to purchase any 3 services.
WePay cash credits are valid for 30 days.
As soon as a Top-up is purchased the 3 customer has 30 days to generate as many calls and texts as possible in order to earn maximum cash credits again.
WePay prices The new WePay top-ups are easy to understand, all-cash vouchers available in £10, £15 and £20 denominations, with no expiry date. 5p per minute cash credit for each minute of calls received 2p per text for texts received 10p a minute to call a 3 mobile anytime 30p a minute to other networks anytime 15p a minute to landlines and non-geographic numbers anytime 10p per text to any network 25p for a picture message to any network 50p per video message to any network 3's PAYG customers now will be able to choose WePay cash vouchers or opt for a monthly bundle of calls or texts. Calls from non-3 customers calling from abroad and 3 Customer Services do not earn WePay cash credits.
Content prices Music £1.50 per download of a full length music video / audio track 50p per download of Pete Tong’s Fasttraxx and Zane Lowe’s Revolution programmes Sport 50p per match for game highlights including goals – all delivered at 5.15pm on Saturdays and 5 minutes after the final whistle for matches played on other days Mobile TV 10p per Coronation Street clip £1.00 to access the latest TV show clips, highlights or catch ups - 20 times in 24 hours Games 50p to rent the latest game for 3 days 50p to join friends and play a multi-player game

i've been testing this for the last week. it comes in 3 parts and you only have to flash the last two parts. it needs a memory card to write to, it can understand 3g sims, it is slow to boot. it seems to be a bit power intensive, especially when signal searching. the new internet explorer is fantastic. it tells you what it is loading. the predictive text is like 2003se, the default applications run faster when loaded. it has no task manager or file manager in rom. most games work.
