Motorola V600 Flashing, flexing, and faffing around guide!

This page is intented as a guide to help you through the potentially daunting task of flashing and/or flexing your Motorola V600 phone. The whole process may take roughly around 20 minutes. We aim to make this as simple and clear as possible so that you know exactly what to do. Please feel free to leave any comments in the flexing guide feedback thread.
We can now also remotely unlock Motorola phones via. IMEI number for a limited time only, or unlock via cable remotely should the IMEI method become unavailable. Both methods should work anywhere in the world - visit the unlocking forum or main unlocking site for more information.

Before you start:

Some points you should be aware of before flashing/flexing your Motorola mobile phone are:

  • you could invalidate any warranty.
  • if something goes wrong, it could also cause some damage to your phone, so use this guide at your own risk!
  • you may lose some settings, text messages, contacts etc. after perfoming this - so make sure any important files and information are backed up (eg by using Motorola Phone Tools) before starting this procedure.

Files you will need:

Hardware you will need:

  • A USB data cableexample USB cable
Note: some people find the plain looking cables without the thick bits on (ferrite cores) or boxes in the middle to be better for flashing as they prevent full power coming through.
  • Motorola V600
  • PC

Now that you've got everything you need, let's get started!

  1. Unzip/extract the file called PST_6.7_GENERAL.zip
(if you do not already have an unzipping program, I recommend you download and use WinRAR)

    unzip PST_6.7_GENERAL

  2. Run PST_6.7_GENERAL.exe to install the Product Support Tool software on your computer (by default to C:\Program Files\Motorola\PST\

    PST_6.7_GENERAL.exe

  3. If you are using Windows XP, you may be asked to install some patches. However, this is not essential and you can skip this if you wish.

    Once of the XP patches

  4. After the installation, you will be asked to restart your computer. I chose to restart later as I'll be doing this after step 5.

Restart your computer after the install is complete

  5. Next unzip the files from PST_6.7_Patch.zip into the folder where you installed PST 6.7 (C:\Program Files\Motorola\PST\ by default). Overwrite any files in there with the new patch ones, and then restart your computer.

Extract the patch filesOverwrite all the files with the the patch files

  6. The files in p2kman_pst.zip are the drivers required for your computer to communicate to your V600 via the USB port. Therefore, unzip these into a folder you can access, as you may be asked for these files. I put them in C:\Program Files\Motorola\PST\ as this keeps all the files needed for flashing in one place.

    Extract the patch files

  7. You now need to extract the firmware and/or flex files. Again, for simplicity, I'd extract them to the PST folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\Motorola\PST\). A word of warning though - once the firmware has been extracted, the resulting file is considerably larger than the zipped file, so ensure you have at least 60mb space spare!
The firmware file downloaded from this website (TRIPLETS_G_0B.09.1DR_A_LP0039_JPG_0B_TRIP_0B_04.05R_SE6446AXXF10F8_1FF.rar) is a .rar file and will need unzipping to produce the file which can be used to flash with (same file name, but with .shx as an extension rather than .rar, but is much larger in file size - as shown in the image below). I used WinRAR to do this.

    Flash file size

  8. Now connect your phone to the PC using the USB cable. If you have not performed this proceedure before, Windows will detect the new hardware and ask for the drivers. Simply select the location of the files you extracted in step 6 (e.g. C:\Program Files\Motorola\PST\p2kman_pst\)

    New Hardware Detected

  9. Next run the program MultiFlashFlex.exe, which is found in the PST folder (C:\Program Files\Motorola\PST\MultiFlashFlex.exe)

    MultiFlashFlex icon

  10. As we are using the combined flash and flex in this guide, check the "Enable Flash" box and then press the Browse button to select the flash file you extracted in step 7. If you were just flexing, you would select the "Enable Flex" box.

    Select the flash file

  11. On the right hand side of the window, in the preferences section, ensure that the "Override existing phone software...", "Master Clear phones after flexing" and "Master Reset phones after flexing" checkboxes are ticked.

    Select these options

  12. At the bottom of the window, under the "Device" column, you should see your phone listed. If not, make sure that everything is connected properly, and that the drivers are installed correctly and functioning.

Your phone should be listed under "Devices"

  13. You are now ready to begin the flashing process! Just press "Start" and wait - do not touch anything that may interrupt the process!
(note: if you get asked for any drivers after pressing "start", simply press "next" when the window pops up, as Windows should automatically find the drivers you require. If it doesn't, point it to the PST directory as before. You may find it says "Flash Failed" after you've finished installing the drivers. This doesn't matter, just press start again and it should all go smoothly.)

    Start flashing!

  14. It should take roughly 10 minutes to complete, after which you should have the new flash/flex installed to your phone - congratulations! However, when I flashed my phone, I noticed it took a while for anything to display in the "status" section and started to wonder if anything was happening - DON'T DO ANYTHING! It is actually doing something even if it doesn't look that way. After a few minutes or less the status will update and you will be able to see stages similar to those shown below. If it fails for some reason - don't worry! - simply switch your phone off and on again, and repeat the process.

    Checking phone...

Switching the device into flash mode

    Flashing in progress...

    Flashing in progress 2...

    Flashing in progress 3...

    Flashing in progress 4...

    Flashing in progress 5...

  15. After the program says "Successful FLASH!", you'll find your V600 has switched itself off. Simply unplug everything and then switch your phone back on again (if your phone did not switch off, restart your phone to ensure that the new firmware becomes active).

    Flash successful!

  16. Your phone will then start up as normal, except with the following differences:
    - you may find the language starts off as German - don't worry about this as the language should revert back to your normal one once it connects to your network.
    - it may take slightly longer than normal for the phone to find the network, but it will do (provided you can normally).

Congratulations! You've successfully flashed your Motorola V600!!

FAQ:

Q. What is flex?

A. Flexing is where you replace the Flex file (the software you see and use, the GUI). This is the bit which allows you to store more texts and get message delivery reports.

Q. What is flash?

A. Flashing is where you replace the firmware (the software that runs the hardware). Usually more for fixing bugs, etc. rather than adding features.

Q. How can I unlock my Motorola phone (remotely via IMEI or cable)?

A. We can now also remotely unlock Motorolas via. IMEI number for a limited time only, or unlock via cable remotely should the IMEI method become unavailable. Both methods should work anywhere in the world - visit our mobile phone unlocking site for further information or visit the unlocking forum.

Q. Which version flash or flex do I need to enable phone sms storage rather than sim-only?

A. Flex version SE6446AXXF10F8 has the capability for delivery reports, my version (SE6414AXXB10FD) doesn't.

Q. Can I flash/flex using bluetooth rather than a cable?

A. Unforunately no, you can't. The reason for being unable to flash a phone using bluetooth is because the phone operating system is suspended at the start of the process, and the phone goes into flash mode which would drop the bluetooth connection.

Q. Should I leave the SIM card in the phone whilst performing this or not?

A. It shouldn't make a difference. Most people tend to do it with their SIM card in.

Q. How long will it take?

A. It took me roughly 7 minutes to install the software, 10 mins to flash, therefore roughly 20 minutes in total.

Q. I get a "camera busy" error message?

A. You may need a newer version of the flash file that supports your hardware. Visit the forums for more information on this.

Q. How can I delete the web sessions/add more internet settings?

A. To delete websessions from the V600, start up P2Kman and locate the /a/WebSession file (at the bottom). Once deleted, restart your phone and your websessions should be gone! You'll then be able to add your own settings or download them from the internet via a text message.
